Feeding Directions

How to Feed Scratch Grain

Scratch grain is more of an activity than feed. Toss 1-2 tablespoons per bird, scattered on the ground to encourage natural scratching behavior which keeps your birds active and socially engaged with rest of the flock.

Limit to a maximum of 10% of their diet.

Wait until 12-16 weeks old. Always provide grit for digestion.

The Golden Rule: Treats Only Scratch should make up no more than 10% of your chickens' daily diet. Think of it as dessert, not dinner.

When to Feed It Offer scratch in the afternoon or evening. It boosts their metabolism and helps keep them warm overnight in winter—nature's little heating system.

How Much to Give About 1-2 tablespoons per bird per day, or a small handful for the flock. Only give them what they can finish in 10-20 minutes. If there's scratch left on the ground after that, you're overfeeding.

How to Serve It Scatter it on the ground in a dry area or in their run. This encourages natural foraging behavior and keeps them entertained (because bored chickens are trouble).

Age Matters Wait until your chickens are 12-16 weeks old before introducing scratch. Younger birds need focused nutrition for growth, not snacks.

Don't Forget the Grit Make sure your flock has access to chicken grit. It's essential for breaking down those hard grains in their gizzards. No grit = poor digestion.

The Bottom Line Scratch is a treat, not a meal. Feed it smart, and your chickens stay warm and productive all winter long and happily foraging throughout the year.

Natural Packaging

Our bags are made of unbleached kraft paper. Unlike most feed bags that have a plastic living, our bags have ZERO lining. After all, we go through so much trouble to produce a chemical free feed, why would we allow the packaging to leach chemicals into it?

This means that the bag may naturally absorb some oils from the feed. Your bags may become a bit speckled... just like your eggs! This is normal and truly natural.

Ingredient Quality & Sourcing

We hold the highest standards for our natural chicken feed and supplements. It's not just the ingredient alone. How it's grown and handled matters a lot, too. That's why we're so careful about where we source our ingredients. They're all US grown and chemical-free.
