Our bags are made of unbleached kraft paper. Unlike most feed bags that have a plastic living, our bags have ZERO lining. After all, we go through so much trouble to produce chemical free chicken stuff, why would we allow the packaging to leach chemicals into it?
Offer grit as a free choice to your birds starting at 5 weeks old, allowing them to eat as much as they need for digestion. Keep it in a separate container from your feed (combining it can lead to overconsumption). Chickens need a very small amount of grit, about 1/6-1/4lb per month.
Chickens don't have teeth, so they rely on grit to grind down their food in their gizzard (think of it as their built-in food processor).
There are two types of grit, and chickens need both:
Insoluble Grit (we use crushed granite): This is the hard stuff that stays in the gizzard and grinds down grains, seeds, and fibrous foods. It doesn't dissolve, it just keeps working like sandpaper until it eventually wears down and gets replaced.
Soluble Grit (we use limestone chips): This dissolves slowly in the digestive system, providing a steady source of calcium. Laying hens especially need this for strong eggshells.
Our grit is a 50/50 blend of both, so your chickens get the grinding power they need and the calcium boost for healthy eggs. One product, both benefits.
Do chickens on pasture need grit? If your chickens free-range on natural ground with rocks and pebbles, they'll usually find their own insoluble grit. But confined or coop-raised chickens absolutely need it provided. And all laying hens benefit from extra soluble grit (calcium) for strong shells, especially if they're not getting enough from their environment.
If your chickens eat whole grains, seeds, or forage for tough plants and bugs, they need grit to digest it properly. Without it, they can't break down their food... and that means wasted nutrition.
